Among the 11,600 country clubs in the U.S., California claims quite a few. While there are clubs that cost several million dollars to join with annual membership fees in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, there are clubs in which you simply can't join without being invited. Don't worry, you won't be invited to join if you have to ask how much it costs.

TOP CALIFORNIA COUNTRY CLUBS

Cypress Point in Pebble Beach #2 in the World in 2013. Members have included Bob Hope and celebrity cast of all-stars. "One year they had a big membership drive at Cypress. They drove out 40 members," said Hope who was a dues-paying member for 40 years. This is the course that golfers dream about playing. No such luck.

San Francisco Golf Club #27 in the World. Founded in 1895 as one of the first 100 clubs in America, it is intensely private and shuns attention.

Los Angeles Country Club #30 in the World. Opened in 1928, rumor has it that this exclusive, private club shunned Hugh Hefner's request for membership. He lives off one of the fairways. Money can't buy you golf, though it may buy you love.

Riviera Country Club #33 in the World. Located in Pacific Palisades not far from the Getty Villa, this course has hosted the Northern Trust Open in recent years. Buy a ticket to be a spectator at the tournament. That's as close as you'll get to ever joining this club.
