Artichoke Festival Fanatics

It’s hard to believe that Marilyn Monroe once served as beauty queen at the Castroville Artichoke Festival. She’s not forgotten at the annual celebration of dining, drinking and dancing at Monterey County Fairgrounds. In fact, her timeless beauty apparent at the Marilyn Monroe look-alike contest is much like fine festival wines that improve with age.  The festival, itself, has matured and become so popular that the main event was relocated to Monterey County Fairgrounds in 2014 to accommodate newcomers and the growing body of artichoke fanatics who want their “fix” of fresh artichokes delivered direct from the field to this food extravaganza.

Here’s a sampling of the fun on May 30 & 31, 2015:

  • Sign up for an Ocean Mist artichoke field tour and learn interesting facts  (like California grows 100% of the nation’s artichokes.)
  • Dress in your best Marilyn Monroe costume for the lookalike contest at the Festival.
  • Compete in the Artichoke Eating Contest.
  • Vie for title as best artichoke picker as you wear your canasta (bag) on your back and toss artichokes over your shoulder into the bag which holds up to 85 lbs of vegetables!
