There must be a lot of wood-carving talent out there because the wood signs seem to be everywhere you go in California! These aren’t your ordinary wood-shop signs, however. These signs have shape, color and sometimes even intricate art designs.

One of the most notable cities to make use of wood carved signs has to be Leucadia in San Diego County. The local beaches greet travelers with beautifully carved signs telling you where you are…D Street, Grandview, Moonlight and the famed Swami’s (surfing beach) are top spots for receiving a warm “aloha”. In the photos we show Half Moon Bay, Pismo Beach and Hermosa Beach as well as Leucadia and Encinitas.  Wood signs are such a relief from urban blight. A nice wood-carved sign in the shape of a surfboard or clam –is something to make you feel all warm, fuzzy–and proud.  It may be a high-tech world but ‘old-fashioned’ never goes out of style.
