Just like your favorite ball league, some of California’s museums have seasons in which the public can come play. Though you’d think a museum would want to be open all the time so tourists & visitors could see the displays, in California’s mountain areas that isn’t always part of the game plane.  When you hear where they’re located, you’ll know why right off the bat.

These California Mountain Museums are now open for summer! Most close again around September or October. Check each museum’s season and hours before going!

  • Giant Forest Museum – Located in  Sequoia Kings Canyon National Park, this museum is closed in the winter. Banks of snow often obstruct your view of the museum, much less allow you to get in the door after a snow storm!
  • Top of the Sierra Center – California’s highest museum at the top of Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort is located at 11,053 feet.
  • Sierra Nevada Logging Museum – Located in Arnold, one of the roads to the museum closes in the winter months.
  • Big Bear Valley Historical (Eleanor Abbott) Museum – Located at the northeast end of Big Bear City Park, you can practically shoot a hole through the building where the docents work. Instead of  volunteers freezing their bippies off, the museum shuts down during the winter months.
  • Alpine County Museum – The Markleeville museum is charming but slightly remote–especially after it snows.  One road shuts down all winter long. It just doesn’t make sense for volunteers to try to get there. And if getting there is a challenge, getting tourists interested in visiting during the snow season is even harder. Just over the mountain and that impassable winter road is Bear Mountain Ski Resort. Where do you think people would rather be when it snows–museum or mountain slopes?
