California State Parks Living History Days

This weekend there are several fantastic opportunities to get to know California’s past.

  • At San Juan Bautista State Historic Park (left photo) an annual event, Early Days, takes place on June 15 and 16, 2013, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. both days. Hands on demonstrations, costumed actors, docent information and activities for all ages are included in the $3 admission. The Park is located in the city of San Juan Bautista, 3 miles east of Highway 101, 7 miles west of Hollister, 15 minutes south of Gilroy. Call 831-623-4881, or parks.ca.gov
  • At Pio Pico State Historic Park (right photo) in Whittier, a similar event takes place on June 15, Noon – 5 p.m. Admission to this event is Free.  See piopico.org
  • Columbia State Historic Park offers Saturday and Sunday free tours at 11 a.m. with costumed guides. Enjoy an hour-long walking tour of town led by a park staff member or docent. See the actual gold discovery site, learn about the buildings and early merchants of Columbia. Contact Columbia State Historic Park at 209-588-9128.
  • On Angel Island WWII Living History takes place at Ft. McDowell on June 15 and 16, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Call (415) 435-5537, parks.ca.gov/angelisland
  • In Sacramento at Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park there is a special event, Hands-on-History: War in California! on June 15, 2013, 10 a.m. -5 p.m. Cannon firing demonstrations: 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m.; Musket demonstrations periodically throughout the day. Cost is $7 adult, $5 child. Sutter’s Fort ; 2701 L Street, Sacramento
