Day of the Dead Controversies

As Californians learn to embrace Day of the Dead (Dia de Los Muertos), the celebration continues to be misunderstood. Last year Disney’s attempt to trademark the name, “Day of the Dead” caused an uprising and the company dropped that effort. At Universal Studios Hollywood a Halloween scare sensation, La Llorona, based on Day of the Dead’s mythical weeping woman, similarly was met with skepticism by some, while being one of the most popular attractions. That particular scare zone didn’t return in the 2014 Halloween Horror Nights line up. And Knott’s Berry Farm’s Day of the Dead Scare Zone has recently been under attack by an Hesperia resident for trivializing what he considers a sacred holiday.
