Diwali is a festival celebration officially happening on October 23, 2014. Interesting, colorful and possibly confusing, Diwali was introduced by the Asian Indian population (from India.) The literal meaning of ‘Diwali’ in Sanskrit is ‘a row of lamps’. The most popular tradition of Diwali is filling little clay lamps with oil and wick and lighting them in rows all over the house . The annual Festival of Lights is popular in India and California where six top Bay Area and Northern California cities–Cupertino, Fremont, Sunnyvale, Livingston, Yuba City and Santa Clara–have approx. 14% of their population represented by Asian Indians. Here’s a list of Diwali festivals and events in California! They are open to the public, providing music, dance, games, vendor booths and more.
