California’s piers, many built 100 years ago, are in a constant state of disrepair. It’s a lot of effort to keep up appearances when it comes to piers.  Here is a small sampling of piers:

  • CAYUCOS PIER: Cayucos Pier (pictured) was in need of repair and a fundraising effort called Cayucos Pier Project raised around $500,000, not quite enough for the $3.5 million renovation that Country of San Luis Obispo stepped in to fund.
  • SANTA CRUZ WHARF: Constructed on a base of over 4,400 Douglas-fir piles, the Santa Cruz Wharf is the longest timber-supported structure in the United States. Built in 1914, the  popular icon has the most businesses and restaurants of any public pier in the state. Santa Cruz Wharf Improvement Project was presented last year to usher the half-mile long landmark into the next century of its existence.
  • SEAL BEACH PIER: As the city celebrates its 100th birthday, the only restaurant on the pier has been shuttered for several years. The City has not reached an agreement with any company to serve food on the pier as of yet, citing structural analysis requirements and possible repairs.
  • SAN MATEO COUNTY’S WERDER PIER:  Here’s an example of pier that the public longs to utilize (great fishing!) but the owner, County of San Mateo, has not identified as a priority to repair for public use.
