This weekend beautiful, hand-made lanterns illuminate Jesse Square in San Francisco, bringing a beloved tradition from the City of San Fernando in the Philippines 7,000 miles away! The lanterns are called “parol” and they symbolize hope and goodwill. In a place where Catholics make up a majority of the population lanterns evoking the Star of Bethlehem dot towns across the country. San Fernando hosts the biggest and best known lantern festival, but the smaller San Francisco, Calif. event embodies the spirit of the Philippines. San Francisco Parol Lantern Festival & Parade happens on December 12, 2015.
