Splish, Splash Columbia Muster

The annual Columbia Firemen’s Muster on April 30, 2016 includes fire crews from the western United States. Columbia Fire Protection District, formed in 1849 during the Gold Rush, has an annual budget of $60,000 and ISO Rating of 2 (1 is top!) The district is considered one of the best for training firefighters, says Chief Brian Conroy, who ho donates his $500-a-month salary back to his team.

Famous pre-1900 fires in California

  • SACRAMENTO: Fires in April & November 1850 destroyed commercial establishments. On November 4, 1852 nearly 85% of the city was destroyed.  A second fire in 1854 destroyed 12 newly reconstructed downtown city blocks.
  • YREKA: July 4, 1871 fire burned down much of the town.
  • AMADOR CITY: The Fleehart was the only store building to survive the big fire of 1878.
  • WEAVERVILLE: The main part of Chinatown burned down in 1906.
  • COULTERVILLE: Large portions of the town burned down in July  1859, 1879 and 1899.
  • SONORA: June 1852 Great Fire burned nearly every building in the town.
