Eat Your California Broccoli, Mr. Pres...

Photos: Michelle Obama, the First Lady, holds broccoli; farm workers in Greenfield, California. Many are too young to remember a president named George H. W. Bush. Back in 1990 he spoke out against broccoli, and it took the California broccoli growers years to recoup.  Here's what he said: "Just as Poland had a rebellion against totalitarianism, I am rebelling against broccoli, and I refuse to give ground. I do not like broccoli, and I haven’t liked it since I was a little kid and my mother made me eat it. And ...
How Can One Little Trail Be So Closed? Mossbrae Waterfall in Dunsmuir

How Can One Little Trail Be So Closed?...

By on May 02, 2012 in News
The delightful Mossbrae waterfall which feeds from the Sacramento River is located in Dunsmuir, Calif. Visitors LOVE it, but getting to it has become  difficult after officials closed the trail and began writing citations last year. The trail  happens to be part of an active railroad--hikers must jump off the track when trains come by.  Visitors and locals are crying fowl over the closure, and an attempt to build a new trail may take several years, if funded to the tune of $600,000 - up.  The waterfall has been one ...
Johnsons Beach in Guerneville Bridges Generation Gap

Johnsons Beach in Guerneville Bridges ...

GUERNEVILLE, CALIF.--Located just beneath the Guerneville Bridge on the Russian River, lazy days await. A cozy beach with rentals--innertubes, paddle boats, umbrellas for shade and beach chairs--is just the start of this happy camp. "Get off the rope, Johnny," says an adult, male voice over the intercom system that can be heard on the banks of the Russian River. "Johnny, am I going to have to call your parents and have them come get you?" the voice admonishes. Presumably coming from the beach concession shack where you can buy sodas ...
How a Marsh & Creek Became Hawaiian Gardens, Calif.

How a Marsh & Creek Became Hawaii...

Photos: Hawaiian Gardens celebrates Hawaiians? No! Local celebrations include Robert Canada Friendship Powwow (left) and Mexican Independence Day (right). Hawaiian Gardens evokes images of tiki torches and exotic Hawaiian dancers with their coconut bras, grass skirts, leis and long, flowing hair. Don't look for tropical palm trees swaying in the breeze and lush plants such as Plumeria  when you arrive, however. There are palm trees and gardens--and even a few inspired by the Hawaiian Islands--but the city just off the 6o5 Freeway is better known for card tables than anything else. ...
Sometimes It Feels Like Needles in Needles, California

Sometimes It Feels Like Needles in Nee...

Today you're not going to break a sweat in Needles, California. It's actually the dead of winter in the Tri-State area where the temperature is in the 60s. Enjoy it! When April comes around things begin to heat up as the daytime average becomes a pleasant 85, but soon, your skin  feels the piercing sun as temps hover around 110 degrees in July. One summer day in 2005, it reached a whopping 125 degrees Fahrenheit!  Is it hot enough for you? Though not for everyone is suited for such extremes ...
Lucia Lodge in Big Sur Coast – Modest Digs, World Class Views

Lucia Lodge in Big Sur Coast – M...

Lucia is a bend in the road, a mountain top vista with a cluster of businesses on Highway 1 in Big Sur. People generally don't make it their final destination, but it provides a worthy road stop for those who are hoping to stay in the coastal mountains to enjoy the view at Lucia Lodge--and you better enjoy the view because there's not much else to do--no cell service, no TV, no shops, no stores and only the restaurant on site that charges up to $16 for a hamburger! Oh, ...

Pictured is a pumpkin patch at a nursery in Carmel Valley, part of Carmel by the Sea. Traveling California in search of the perfect pumpkin patch to photograph isn't easy. To do a good job, you really need to drive the country roads of the Central Valley and Central Coast, where pumpkins grow so abundantly and can be purchased at businesses such as Avila Valley Barn.  Carmel is located on the Central Coast,  where you'll find the pumpkin patches scattered miles apart. In the Central Valley, the heartland and ...

It’s ALL About Labor on Labor Da...

In California, it's ALL about "labor" these days. While the city of Santa Paula celebrates the national holiday with a Labor Day Parade held downtown, many are certain to be working on the first Monday in September and others will be toiling away, looking for jobs. At the beach,  lifeguards are told that Labor Day is a mandatory day of work. The same is true at hotels, airports, and state & national parks in California where tourism reaches a peak during the three-day holiday weekend before kids go back to ...

Beautiful at the Beach – SheR...

Do you fancy yourself whirling and twirling at the beach? Hot off the press, here's a fresh picture from the beach taken today to help launch your Labor Day Weekend.  The scene is reminscent of the Zz Top song, She's Got Legs: She's got legs, She knows how to use them. The beaches are expected to be filled with danger and excitement as huge waves  from a storm thousands of miles away  near New Zealand, started the chain of waves moving towards California. They are expected to pound the Southern California beaches ...
