{"id":12853,"date":"2013-07-07T01:54:59","date_gmt":"2013-07-07T08:54:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.seecalifornia.com\/traveltips\/?p=12853"},"modified":"2013-07-07T01:54:59","modified_gmt":"2013-07-07T08:54:59","slug":"california-hit-and-run-epidemic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.seecalifornia.com\/traveltips\/california-hit-and-run-epidemic\/","title":{"rendered":"California Hit and Run Epidemic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"img\" src=\"http:\/\/www.seecalifornia.com\/images\/kfind.jpg\" width=\"922\" height=\"456\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On Pacific Coast Highway in Southern California flowers and crosses are placed along the side of the road, \u00a0maintained by survivors of those killed on a busy stretch where bicyclists share it with cars and trucks moving 60 miles per hour.\u00a0On that same road at the Sunset Beach Post Office is a hand-written letter (shown in photo) asking for help in finding the person \u00a0who knocked down local resident Kathy Gallagher. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seecalifornia.com\/people\/kathy-gallagher.html\">Here&#8217;s the story about what happened to her&#8230;<\/a>&gt;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>According to Los Angeles Police Department approx. 20,000 hit-and-run crashes ranging from fender benders to fatalities are recorded each year.<\/li>\n<li>4,000 hit &amp; runs in Los Angeles each year end in injury, and approx. 100 people are killed.<\/li>\n<li>In L.A. an incredible 50% of crashes are hit-and-runs (11% of vehicle collisions are hit-and-runs nationally.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A report examining the underlying psychology behind hit-and-runs found several factors come into play:<\/p>\n<p>1. A slightly antisocial personality or disposition is greatly amplified by the presence of alcohol<br \/>\n2.
