Sycamore Beach (shown) is part of Point Mugu \u00a0at the base of Sycamore Canyon, an entryway to more than 70 miles of hiking trails in the Santa Monica Mountains. \u00a0The very large Mugu Rock nearby is a headlands promontory \u00a0you can&#8217;t miss. The rock is popular for climbing at beaches between Ventura and Los Angeles that are enjoyable this time year before spring break. Beware at this location and keep an eye on your kids. In 2008 a rogue wave swept away three residents from nearby Oxnard who were climbing on Mugu Rock. The word,\u00a0Mugu, may have come from a Chumash Indian term\u00a0Muwu, or beach.<\/p>\n<p>Last weekend beaches along the coast were fairly trashed and the water was unhealthy after it rained.
