The Irish in me becomes apparent when I visit San Francisco. There&#8217;s something so warm and familiar about the friendly atmosphere of an Irish pub, or the fact that San Francisco City Hall beams with green, turning on its green lights in honor of St. Patrick&#8217;s Day each year. This year&#8217;s lighting dates: March 7-17, 2014 at dusk. Even the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.seecalifornia.com\/festivals\/san-francisco-stpatricks-parade.html\"><strong>St. Patrick&#8217;s Day Parade<\/strong><\/a> takes a stand, this year honoring the Irish Workers of America. The Bay Area&#8217;s Irish heritage is well established, dating back to the 1800s. Irish immigrants were given land grants from the Mexican Government, especially in Marin County, which was nicknamed Little Ireland. The Irish population in San Francisco numbered 4,200 in 1852 and by 1880 there were more than 30,000, 37 % of San Francisco&#8217;s population!<\/p>\n<p>There are over 300 pubs and dining places in San Francisco considered Irish.
