On Cinco de Mayo weekend there’s more to California than meets the eye\u00a0as\u00a0some celebrate\u00a0Polynesian and island cultures at\u00a0the same time.\u00a0Would it\u00a0 rock your boat\u00a0\u00a0to learn\u00a0that Polynesians may have visited California around 700 AD, sharing their knowledge with locals?\u00a0\u00a0According to an archaeologist and Anthropology professor at the California Polytechnic State University, contact with Chumash approx. 1,300 years ago\u00a0likely\u00a0resulted in conveyance of sewn-plank boat technology unlike any that existed across the New World. Another exchange approx. 700 years ago\u00a0from Hawaii introduced\u00a0advanced fishing techniques\u00a0several hundred years before the Spaniards arrived by ship.<\/p>\n

And thanks to those who introduced\u00a0“island time” to our shores, Californians can\u00a0experience Polynesian cultures through colorful\u00a0costumes, sweet foods and dance moves that tell a story. Here’s a list of upcoming festivals & events<\/a>:<\/p>\n
