It pays tribute to the Mexican victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla in on May 5, 1862. Though it is celebrated in the Puebla region of Mexico as an important milestone in\u00a0the effort to fight off the occupying French, the\u00a0festivities\u00a0in California are actually more widespread.
