Now in its 41st year, the annual event typically takes stock of successes while daily efforts by California Department of Fish and Wildlife and the national government are geared toward improving the health of threatened and endangered species. California was one of the first states to enact statutes protecting threatened\u00a0and endangered animal species in 1970 \u2013 the year of the first Earth Day.
