A mule is the offspring of a male donkey and a female horse, possessing some of the most desirable characteristics of both&#8211; endurance and sure-footedness of the donkey, and the vigor, strength and courage of the horse. Intelligent and determined, mules have a reputation for\u00a0being stubborn though testing has found that label\u00a0isn&#8217;t\u00a0necessarily true. Mules usually surpass horses, donkeys and even dogs in problem solving.<\/p>\n<p>In California mules are used to transport cargo in wilderness areas of the Sierra Nevada mountains, where shoulder to shoulder &#8212; miner and mule used to breathe the same dust 10 hours a day during the Gold Rush.
