One of our favorites that officially appears on beautifully-carved signage\u00a0is\u00a0named for neighboring Self-Realization Fellowship.<\/p>\n<p>As a tourist &#8220;just visiting&#8221; a beach for the very first time, try\u00a0asking a\u00a0surfer (recognized by the surfboard) what the name of that beach is. Sometimes you&#8217;ll receive an answer, but don&#8217;t be surprised if there&#8217;s a shrug\u00a0or\u00a0&#8220;I dunno know.&#8221; \u00a0There are many beaches in California that go by names not necessarily printed on maps, nor appearing on city websites. Surfers may tell you what they call their special spots&#8211;or maybe not.<\/p>\n<p>Ray Bay, located at the mouth of the San Gabriel River in Seal Beach, Calif.\u00a0isn&#8217;t listed\u00a0on a map, but surfers know where it&#8217;s at.\u00a0They named it for the abundance of\u00a0stingrays\u00a0in that location.<\/p>\n<p>Privates, at Santa Cruz County&#8217;s Opal Cliffs, is\u00a0named for the gated beach where you\u00a0must\u00a0buy a $5 pass to enter.<\/p>\n<p>Other beaches go by names: \u00a0Trestles, Old Man&#8230; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seecalifornia.com\/beaches\/surfer-beach-names.html\">read more<\/a>&gt;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pictured is Swami&#8217;s, a popular surfing beach in Encinitas, California.
