The North San Diego beach city\u00a0is named for the popular 19th century Karlsbad Spa in Europe. When sea captain, John Frazier, drilled and struck water in\u00a01885, the artesian well appeared to\u00a0have similar chemical properties to the famous Well Number Nine in the Karlsbad Bohemia Spas in Europe. This critical\u00a0water discovery became the basis for growth, tourism and the formation of the\u00a0\u00a0Carlsbad Land and Water Company. What a relief! Coming out of the severe\u00a0drought from 1869 to 1872, water could secure the town&#8217;s\u00a0economic\u00a0future.<\/p>\n<p>Today water plays an important role in Carlsbad&#8217;s seaside tourist mecca\u00a0status. It is home to\u00a0world class spa resorts,\u00a0Omni La Costa Resort &amp; Spa and Park Hyatt\u00a0Aviara Resort, and it offers families water-themed vacations at Legoland California with Sea Life Aquarium and Chima\u00a0Water Park.
