From the kids&#8217; zone of funkativity to bands with &#8216;funk&#8217; in their names, the event that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seecalifornia.com\/festivals\/long-beach-funk-fest.html\">began as a free street festival in Long Beach <\/a>\u00a0now charges $20 to attend. It also relocated from downtown streets to the Queen Mary ship where it takes place on\u00a0Labor Day (Sept. 1, 2014.) \u00a0Tickets, queenmary.com<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s hard to define funk but here&#8217;s what one source has to say about it: \u00a0Funk originated in the 1960s when African-American musicians created a rhythmic, danceable new form of music through a mixture of soul music, jazz, and R&amp;B. Funk de-emphasizes melody and harmony and brings a strong rhythmic groove of electric bass and drums to the foreground.
