If you missed the national Poinsettia Day on December 12, perhaps you had a chance to celebrate the 2014 poinsettia crop by picking one up at your local Home Depot, Walmart, Costco or CVS Pharmacy. \u00a0The poinsettia didn&#8217;t exactly get its start in California but one well known rancher\/farmer named Paul Ecke and his son, Paul Ecke, Jr., are credited with turning this plant into a must-have holiday item providing decorator accents to any house, church, social function or even theme park. \u00a0Here are some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seecalifornia.com\/flowers-gardens\/caliifornia-poinsettias.html\">tips on buying and caring for poinsettias<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>10 FAST POINSETTIA FACTS:<\/h3>\n<p>1.\u00a0Joel Poinsett, the first U.S. ambassador to Mexico, is credited with introducing the plant to this country in 1828.<br \/>\n2.\u00a0Paul Ecke Ranch\u00a0created, shaped and dominated the poinsettia market beginning in 1923.<br \/>\n3.\u00a0One big hurdle for growers and sellers is getting consumers to realize that poinsettias are nontoxic.<br \/>\n4. Each year new varieties of poinsettias are introduced to the public.<br \/>\n5. Ecke Ranch was sold in 2012 to an international company which continues to research and create new poinsettias in Encinitas.<br \/>\n6.\u00a080% of poinsettia\u00a0holiday plants are purchased by women.<br \/>\n7. Nearly 100% of poinsettias sold in Sacramento are from California companies.<br \/>\n8. Poinsettias are grown in greenhouses before being shipped to stores for holiday sales.<br \/>\n9. The largest greenhouse growers in the U.S. supplying poinsettias come from California.<br \/>\n10.
