Shelter Cove, the only settlement on the Lost Coast, began officially in the spring of 1965 as the State of California&#8217;s first resort improvement district. Town founders built\u00a0homes, a\u00a0greenbelt and an airstrip, and five decades later, this enclave\u00a0of boutique inns, vacation homes, fishing boats and curio shops is the primary gateway to the wildest coastline in the continental United States, known as the Lost Coast.
