Initially designed and built to\u00a0appease the gods, races slowly grew out of the dragon boat traditions. In the US and Canada there are over 90,000 dragon boat race participants currently. California has clubs and competitions\u00a0in San Diego, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Lake Gregory, Oakland and San Francisco. Very much a team sport, participants of all ages and skill levels can compete. Though it has yet to be classified as an Olympic sport, efforts to gain that status are\u00a0underway.\u00a0If you would like to start up your own dragon boat races, all you need is a local lake and investment in\u00a0these specialized boats that cost several thousand dollars.
