{"id":20740,"date":"2015-07-19T03:37:11","date_gmt":"2015-07-19T10:37:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.seecalifornia.com\/traveltips\/?p=20740"},"modified":"2015-07-19T03:37:11","modified_gmt":"2015-07-19T10:37:11","slug":"lumberjack-heritage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.seecalifornia.com\/traveltips\/lumberjack-heritage\/","title":{"rendered":"Lumberjack Heritage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.seecalifornia.com\/images\/ljack.jpg\" alt=\"img\" width=\"650\" height=\"339\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Tourists from around the globe come to California to see and experience the state&#8217;s redwood forests known to showcase the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seecalifornia.com\/things-to-see\/biggest-tallest-trees.html\">world&#8217;s tallest, biggest trees<\/a>.\u00a0Over 95% of the remaining old growth is in parks and preserves.\u00a0Timber companies don&#8217;t have much old-growth left to cut &#8212;\u00a0less than 5% of\u00a0the original redwood forest area remains untouched and the redwood lumber produced today comes from second- or third- growth forests, i.e., forests that have already been logged once or twice.<\/p>\n<p>While museums and festivals pay homage to lumberjacks in the golden era of logging, the industry hasn&#8217;t\u00a0completely vanished.\u00a0An\u00a0example is Big Creek Lumber sawmill, one of the few remaining operational sawmills in California, and\u00a0the only Redwood sawmill on the Central Coast. The facility on the bluffs above Highway 1 just north of Davenport has occupied the same location more than 50 years since 1964. That sawmill is hosting a\u00a0customer appreciation\u00a0event on July 25, 2015 in Santa Cruz.<\/p>\n<p>Entertaining and educational experiences include seeing the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.seecalifornia.com\/museums\/california-mountain-museums.html\">Sierra Nevada Logging Museum<\/a> in Arnold or the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seecalifornia.com\/dining\/samoa-cookhouse.html\">Samoa Cookhouse<\/a>\u00a0near Eureka\u00a0where you can eat big lumberjack-style meals in the very place\u00a0lumberjacks used to dine. The Cookhouse has been in operation 1893!
