One of the sweetest smelling plants bringing Californians a little closer to the islands with each breath is the\u00a0plumeria flower, celebrated on Sept. 5 & 6, 2015 at the annual Hawaiian Plumeria Festiva<\/a>l and Plant Sale at Balboa Park in San Diego. This year there are 326 varieties of plumeria\u00a0for sale ranging in price from around $10 to $300, depending on the rarity. The perfect plants for drought tolerant gardens, plumerias grow well\u00a0in most parts of California but must be protected when temps dip to 40 degrees F. If the plumeria looks familiar, perhaps you have seen the flower used in leis (floral garlands) worn most frequently in Hawaii, but sometimes available in California. Casual weddings and Hawaiian-themed festivals are places where you’ll see leis worn on the mainland. \u00a0The September festival sells potted plants and possibly some seeds, but not many cuttings\u00a0that are best suited for springtime (April) planting.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
