Often associated with making\u00a0horseshoes and wrought iron fences (two popular applications), at one time blacksmiths made nails to build railroad tracks, created\u00a0tools for mining and construction and helped America grow. 150 years ago\u00a020% of the population worked professionally as blacksmiths. Now less two\u00a0people per one\u00a0million\u00a0are\u00a0professional blacksmiths.<\/p>\n<p>That doesn&#8217;t stop hobbyists and and pros from getting together for\u00a0festivals and events such as the annual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seecalifornia.com\/festivals\/weaverville-blacksmith.html\">Weaverville Blacksmith Hammer In<\/a> March 17-19, or the spring conference of the California Blacksmith Association April 28-May 1 at Humboldt County Fairgrounds. As you might guess, there are only a few women in the trade.
