There are a handful of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.seecalifornia.com\/fairs\/california-fairs-by-date.html\">California fairs<\/a> this week in Napa, Grass Valley, Quincy, Hayfork, Yreka and Costa Mesa.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fair observations:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>As\u00a0you\u00a0line up at the fair gate there\u00a0are still\u00a0a few people (usually adults) who cut in line and give a dumb smile as if it say, &#8220;See what I got away with?&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>The entryway\u00a0\/\u00a0exit is like\u00a0the\u00a0checkout at K-Mart. Inflatable toys offer\u00a0kids their first and last ditch\u00a0effort to convince\u00a0parents\u00a0to cough up\u00a0a few bucks\u00a0for\u00a0something no kid ever knew he or she\u00a0wanted.<\/li>\n<li>Food is expensive. I\u00a0got away cheap with an\u00a08 oz.\u00a0Icee and two cookies for $10. Turkey legs, foot-long hot dogs, roasted corn,\u00a0cheese-drenched chips, curly fries,\u00a0\u00a0hamburgers, BBQ beef sandwiches and ice cream easily eat up a $100 bill.<\/li>\n<li>Teeth cleaning, back massages, mop demos and kitchen gadgets, along with custom license plate frames attract the masses &#8212; year after year.<\/li>\n<li>Within an hour of fair opening the wine bar is\u00a0packed!<\/li>\n<li>Barnyard animals are hard to find. You\u00a0must\u00a0weave past\u00a0food kiosks and carnival rides till you reach the perimeter of the fairgrounds where they keep the critters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pictured are kids having rainbow colored fun at the Orange County Fair.
