{"id":23648,"date":"2016-12-20T23:34:14","date_gmt":"2016-12-21T07:34:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.seecalifornia.com\/traveltips\/?p=23648"},"modified":"2016-12-20T23:34:14","modified_gmt":"2016-12-21T07:34:14","slug":"huntington-beach-stinks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.seecalifornia.com\/traveltips\/huntington-beach-stinks\/","title":{"rendered":"Clearing the Air on the Stinky Smell in Huntington Beach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.seecalifornia.com\/images\/hboil1.jpg\" alt=\"img\" width=\"650\" height=\"339\" \/><\/p>\n<p>From my home office in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seecalifornia.com\/california-cities\/huntington-beach.html\">Huntington Beach<\/a> this week I\u00a0spotted an article in the New York Times titled, &#8220;What stinks in Huntington Beach?&#8221; The story discussed a noxious odor\u00a0people have smelled in\u00a0a 20 mile stretch from Costa Mesa to Huntington Beach, Seal Beach and Belmont Shore in Long Beach. \u00a0I have smelled it and was alarmed, as were my neighbors. Some called the city while others called the gas company. Since the source hasn&#8217;t been identified, it&#8217;s unclear who&#8217;s responsible.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The likelihood of smelling &#8220;the stink&#8221; is extremely low\u00a0for the 11-to-15 million tourists each year\u00a0at HB&#8217;s\u00a09.3 miles of beaches which include two of California State Parks&#8217; most visited assets, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seecalifornia.com\/beaches\/orange-county\/bolsa-chica-huntington-state-beaches.html\">Huntington State Beach and Bolsa Chica State Beach<\/a>. During the past several months I have noticed strong odors three times. Each episode lasted 5-20 minutes.<\/li>\n<li>The odor smells like\u00a0stinky\u00a0mercaptan added to\u00a0natural gas\u00a0products. It\u00a0also has hints of manure and chemicals used in lawn fertilizer.<\/li>\n<li>It is so strong and permeating that\u00a0I have feared\u00a0lighting a match on my BBQ grill\u00a0with the thought that it could explode.<\/li>\n<li>If you\u00a0close all windows and turn on air conditioning you don&#8217;t smell it.<\/li>\n<li>Once based on an\u00a0oil economy and known as &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.seecalifornia.com\/museums\/huntington-beach-oil-museum.html\">Oil City<\/a>&#8220;,\u00a0Huntington Beach residents live near oil fields and offshore oil platforms. We\u00a0are\u00a0familiar with\u00a0odd smells of the oil industry.
