Palo Alto at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.seecalifornia.com\/piers\/aptos.html\">end of a fishing pier<\/a>\u00a0at Rio del Mar Beach in Aptos took its final bow. \u00a0With record-setting waves peaking at\u00a034-feet in the Monterey Bay the strength of the current was too much for this old ship built 100 years ago in 1917.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.seecalifornia.com\/images\/small\/cemshi.jpg\" alt=\"img\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Designed for\u00a0WWI wartime use as a tanker, the Palo Alto wasn&#8217;t finished before the war&#8217;s end. \u00a0She was eventually\u00a0towed\u00a0from Oakland to Seacliff where the pier was built to access what was planned to be an amusement attraction. It lasted only several\u00a0years, then folded.
