It was originally called\u00a0powwaw, pauwau or pauau, and throughout time, it has come to represent the passing down of traditions &#8212; from one generation to the next.\u00a0While tribes report that\u00a0today&#8217;s native youth are\u00a0losing or have lost their roots &#8212; stories, dances and traditions\u00a0&#8212; the pow wow has come to serve a greater cause of promoting Indian heritage among the larger American population.<\/p>\n<p>In California you&#8217;ll find dozens of pow wows on or near tribal lands, but many are held at university campuses in the heart of major cities. Some have been around for decades while others are relatively new. The public is invited to these inclusive (and often free-admission) events where they can learn, be entertained, buy crafts and vendor foods. Are you ready to be Wowed!
