Day 1 of an 8 day bicycle event across California from north to south began on Mother’s Day and when the first leg of the race finished, Peter Sagan (SVK) had overcome a flat tire 3.1 miles from the finish, zooming over the line at around 40 miles per hour to be the first day winner. He passed challengers to win Stage 1 of the 2012 Amgen Tour of California before tens of thousands of screaming fans in Santa Rosa.<\/p>\n
