For 30 years the town of Columbia has celebrated a local plant that looks so nice, but boy can it bite! The beautiful poison oak foliage can be seen throughout the woods and meadows of California’s Gold Rush country in the Sierra Nevada foothills. It’s something that you don’t particularly want to have a personal encounter with, however. Poison oak contains oils that absorb into the skin creating first, a rash, then itching and oozing, and finally the healing process. It’s quite uncomfortable, and that’s putting it mildly.<\/p>\n

The fun loving town that contains Columbia State Historic Park does things a little different than the rest. They have a sense of humor and they definitely honor their past. They look for occasions to celebrate and while other places would have nixed the idea of a poison plant festival, it stuck in Columbia. The rest is history!<\/p>\n
