Shaping up to be a year filled with promise, we’re just 8 days away from 2017 — and 23 days away from Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 16 when admission to national parks is free for a day! Like 2016, National Park Service has set aside 10 free admission days for the new year. While some of the nation’s most popular fee-based parks happen to be in California, the agency says less than one-in-three (124 of the 413 national parks) charge entrance fees ranging from $3 to 30 per day. The other 289 are free to see every day.

  • National Park System includes more than 84 million acres.
  • There is at least one national park in every state.
  • More than 20,000 employees care for national parks.
  • 307 million people visited a national park last year.
  • In a single year visitors spend $16.9 billion at national parks.
