5 Things to Think About This Weekend

Published on: November 02, 2012

When you live in California, there is so much going on that you have to stay focused on what’s in front of you. Most of us survived mid-week Halloween celebrations and have been begging, “Is it the weekend yet?”  Yes, it has arrived, and here are a few considerations while you make use of this excellent time.

1. DAYLIGHT SAVINGS.  On Sunday, November 4, 2012,  at 2 a.m., turn your clock back to 1 a.m. Roll it back 1 hour. You just got an extra hour of sleep. Congratulations!
2. POMEGRANATES.  Celebrate this super food (some believe Eve indulged in the ‘seeded apple’ or pomegranate at the Garden of Eden) by attending California’s only Pomegranate Festival on Nov. 3, 2012.
3. GIVE THANKS.  If you can’t afford to help the folks back East suffering from Hurricane Sandy, pay homage to California’s good fortune by enjoying a day of sunshine and exercise. You can surf, paddle board, ride a bike, walk, exercise, shop, and even ice skate at the holiday rinks that are opening, one by one.
4. PLAN YOUR HOLIDAY STRATEGIES.  Several major holidays are coming up and those who celebrate them should get moving with plans. Thanksgiving is 3 weeks away, and Christmas is just over 7 weeks. If you have a favorite restaurant, make reservations now for Thanksgiving. If you buy Christmas gifts, start shopping.
5. ELECTION.  On Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2012, you can breathe a sigh of relief that the election signs will begin to come down and the whole thing will be decided. Californians are voting on issues ranging from labeling of genetically modified foods that include chemical poisons, to repealing the death sentence, to voting for more taxes. In some cities there are at least 4 to 6 measures that could raise your taxes if you vote for them. Before you vote, take time to read the literature and study the accountability factor on many of these measures.
