The upcoming “Return of the Swallows” at Mission San Juan Capistrano is a localized spin on the annual  St. Joseph’s Day. On March 19 this Christian holiday is equally loved but uniquely celebrated from coast to coast.

Here’s a comparison of two events:

  • San Juan Capistrano: At the daytime event held at Mission San Juan Capistrano children dressed in swallow outfits parade around the mission to celebrate the annual migration and return of the swallows to their nesting grounds. Mariachis perform Spanish guitar music, the famed Mission Bells ring, and there’s a recitation of “Return of the Swallows” story.
  • New Orleans: The annual St. Joseph’s day parade in the French Quarter sponsored by American Italian Marching Club begins with evening food, wine and Italian music followed by marchers dressed in black tuxedos parading until dark.
