NEWPORT BEACH, CALIF. — The City of Newport Beach is really on the ball this summer (as in beach volleyball camp). From surfing to sailing, tidepool hikes to kayaking, what may seem like opportunities available to a privileged few are open to tourists too! Newport Beach calls their summer of fun in the sun Camp Newport (campnewport.com) and they invite adult visitors to sign their kids up for a beach experience like no other. There was a time when summer camps were only open to residents and when available to outsiders, there was often a waiting list. Some municipalities continue this practice but in Newport Beach the city manages to offer more than 450 camps Memorial Day through Labor Day. Open to ages 3-14 years, the camps often last a week or two — just perfect for tourists renting one of those great beach cottages on the sand. Newport Beach is a treasure — it is one of the few cities along the California coast with warm summer ocean temperatures, an expansive recreational harbor and miles of beaches ranging from flat & sandy to rocky shores ideal for tidepool exploring.  Here are some other unique summer camps that have been offered throughout the state in past seasons.
