It’s simply amazing the amount of creativity and talent displayed by those willing to make a chalk art painting on a sidewalk or street, only to have their work vanish, usually within a day! California street festivals are popular events in which the artwork unfolds within a specified time — artists are usually given an hour or several — and the public gets to wander and watch the masterpieces come about. While the street painting festival tradition dates back to 16th century Italy and a time in which Madonna was the sole subject matter today these festivals contain art of every imaginable subject from mermaids to Mickey Mouse, and even tributes to actors like Leonard Nimoy, Robin Williams and Marilyn Monroe. In September you’ll be glad to know there are chalk art / street painting festivals in Sacramento, Ventura, Redondo Beach, San Jose, Chico, Carlsbad and San Luis Obispo!
