If you dig Elvis, pinup girls and tiki culture, you may be considered Old School. What’s really cool is that a new generation has embraced the hairstyles, cars, clothes and music that their grandparents grew up with, even though the old-timers ditched it back in the 80s so they didn’t date themselves. This weekend in Downtown Whittier there’s a car show and Pinup Girl contest. There’s also Tiki Oasis, the world’s biggest tiki festival taking place in San Diego this weekend. It comes complete with period costumes, poolside cocktails, and burlesque style shows for late-nighters. And for those who are convinced that Elvis isn’t dead, head for the Elvis Festival in Costa Mesa on Aug. 30, 2015, 10a-4p (ocmarketplace.com) where this year’s theme, Burning Love, celebrates the King of Rock ‘n Roll with three stages of Elvis tribute artists. Elvis Presley Fan Clubs: Jailhouse Rockers of California and All Shook Up from Nevada will have membership info as well as memorabilia and collectibles for sale. In addition to the Elvis Presley stamp issued on August 12, the U.S. Postal Service will also be offering a special Festival pictorial cancellation and other Elvis themed products. Elvis Presley died on August 16, 1977 at the age of 42 and would be 80 years old, but at the Elvis Festival he doesn’t look a day over 42!
