Halloween Cautionary ‘Tails’ and Tips

CAUTIONARY TALE: We’re bullish about Halloween but don’t recommend taking risks to end up in the slammer. Operation Boo implemented by California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) for the 22nd year targets more than 80,000 registered sex offenders in California, including transients living on the streets. (Unfortunately, up to 25% of sex offenders aren’t registered.)
HALLOWEEN TIPS
- Avoid trick or treating at houses where the lights are out. Sex offenders are not supposed to have lights on in front of their residences and are only allowed to open the door for law enforcement during Halloween.
- Police Departments encourage you to check Megan’s Law website for sex offenders in the areas your children will be in and avoid those homes and apartments. meganslaw.ca.gov
- If you have questions about safety, skip trick or treating at houses and head for community events sponsored by merchants, preferably in areas closed to traffic.
- In 2015 bars are allowed to stay open and serve liquor an hour longer than usual on Halloween night as the clock rolls back 1 hour at 2 a.m. on Nov. 1, Daylight Savings.
- Since Halloween and Daylight Savings time both occur on Oct. 31-Nov. 1, expect DUI/Drivers License Checkpoints. An average DUI costs an estimated $2,800 in fixed costs, plus insurance increases that can be as much as $40,000 over time.
- Chocolate can be deadly to pets in any amount. Keep the treat jar out of paws reach.
- Keep pets secured in areas where they will be less stressed and can’t run away during Trick or Treat.
