Lancaster’s California Poppy Festival takes place this weekend and people want to know (before they go) if the poppy fields at nearby Antelope Valley State Poppy Natural Reserve are in bloom. Sorry– the poppies are pooped according to park officials. Bloom Status Report April 2, 2016: The season ended early. March rains came too late to sustain the bloom that had barely started. The fields are grasses now with only a handful of poppies alongside the trails. The beavertail cactus is blooming, which usually happens after the season has ended– a sign that an early summer is on the way. The California Poppy Festival is an entertaining annual event which includes arts & crafts vendors, food & beverages, and Salsa Saturday music and dance, multiple stages with bands & acts, and Exotic Animals Rainforest.
