Random acts of kindness for military veterans, even a smile and simple, “Thank You,” go a long way in making their sacrifices feel appreciated. One California vet in particular, 93-year-young Sid Halburn, knows how small gestures help others.

A Veterans Story

Halburn volunteers every week at the VA Hospital in Long Beach:

  • He helps on their farm.
  • He cheers lonely vets who have no one coming to see them.
  • Sid uses his own money to buy combs, writing paper, pens, candy and other items to give to vets who have no one.

The former World War II soldier joined the Army 75 years ago when he was 18. An injury prohibited Halburn from completing his mission as part of an elite group of specially-trained soldiers — all members of his unit were killed! Approx. 3% of the world population (75 million) lost their lives in the deadliest war ever.

“We owe so much to so many, who made the ultimate sacrifice,” said Sid, who spends much of his time helping other veterans. “I want them to know they aren’t alone, they’re not forgotten and we care very much for them and the sacrifices they’ve made for our freedom.”
