California Burns

Something that rarely happens in San Francisco did on Labor Day Weekend — it got hot! In addition to multiple wildfires throughout the state, on Friday, September 1, the temp clocked in at 106°, slightly cooler than San Jose at 108°, Sacramento at 109°, and Death Valley at 112°.

Although air conditioners are now standard equipment in most U.S. homes, more than 40% of California households do not use AC. Additionally, due to the mild climate, 14% of California homes are not heated.

  • Statewide, coastal areas have fewer air conditioners
  • Less than half of the homes in the city of Los Angeles have air conditioning
  • Orange County, 61% have some kind of air conditioning
  • Riverside County, more than 87% of homes are air-conditioned
