California welcomes Mardi Gras with many traditions, an omission (there is no 2018 Gaslamp Mardi Gras in San Diego,) and a whole lot of celebrating! The annual event which is celebrated in places such as Brazil and New Orleans, is the last day of the Carnival season as it always falls the day before Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. This Christian celebration is part of a religious observance that ends approx. six weeks later, before Easter Sunday.
Among the highlights of 2018 Mardi Gras is a guest appearance of Neguinho da Beija-Flor in Los Angeles and San Francisco (tickets at braziliannites.com). One of the most important Carnaval samba-enredo singers of all time, his 10-cities U.S. tour includes two stops in California. Along with his affiliated samba school, Neguinho da Beija-Flor has won 12 Brazilian Carnaval parade competitions.
