Ring Your Clothes to Ring In New Year

Some like to ring in the New Year with a special kind of ringing–as in squeezing the water out of your drenched clothes from that ocean, lake or swimming pool dip. Many call it Polar Plunge, but no matter what name it goes by, it’s an adrenaline rush. Polar swim junkies often don’t know or care that this hormone (also called epinephrine,) is a crucial part of the body’s fight-or-flight response. Produced in the medulla in the adrenal glands as well as some of the central nervous system’s neurons, it is quickly released into the blood, sending impulses to organs. Here are some tips for preparing for the rush.

Adrenaline…

  • Causes air passages to dilate to provide the muscles with the oxygen they need to either fight danger or flee.
  • Triggers the blood vessels to contract to re-direct blood toward major muscle groups, including the heart and lungs.
  • Decreases the body’s ability to feel pain.
  • Causes a noticeable increase in strength and performance
  • Causes heightened awareness in stressful times.
  • Its effect can last for up to an hour.
