New Year’s Day First Day Hikes in California

January 1st–New Year’s Day–is a holiday for the majority of Californians and visitors to the Golden State. With only a 7.69% chance of rain or 92.31% chance of sunshine in Southern California based on Rose Parade weather reports from the past 130 years in which has rained only 10 times, chances are pretty good that you can get outdoors and participate in one of California State Parks many First Day Hikes.

There are more than 70 options to get out see some fabulous scenery shared with docents or park guides who lead hikers, walkers, and sometimes even wheelchair-bound outdoorsmen through spectacular wooded trails, paved paths and perhaps even sandy beaches to see elephant seals and other animals, fowl and fauna.

As we enter a new decade, 2020 offers many incredible highlights & hikes:

California First Day Hikes

  • APTOS: Seacliff State Beach Promenade and Pier 1-mile stroll to the Aptos Creek Bridge offers the lowdown on the Concrete Ship.
  • CARPINTERIA: Carpinteria State Park Bluff Trail 2.5-mile easy hike along the bluffs and beach stops to enjoy coastal views at the seal rookery and tar pits.
  • FORT ROSS: Fort Ross State Historic Park Guided Tour and Tea invites a sit down at the samovar for a cup of hot tea before you hit the road.
  • LAGUNA BEACH: Crystal Cove State Park Loop Trail 3-mile moderate hike has guests looking for birds, bobcats, butterflies and buckwheat.
  • LA HONDA: Portola Redwoods State Park Old Tree Trail through an old-growth redwood grove past the Old Tree that’s over 1,200 years old stops for hikers to discover the banana slug and learn about the marvelous Marbled Murrelet.
