As U.S. and California athletes prepare to compete in the Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, a different type of Olympic drama awaits. News along the California beaches and shores is that huge waves are rolling in–and for Mavericks Big Wave Surf Contest, there’s a YELLOW ALERT meaning that the event may be held this week if the waves increase in size and strength.  Though not an Olympic game, the surfing contest is every bit as challenging. A wrong move can actually cost a surfer his life.

Athletes who have trained to compete in the Winter Olympics 2014 have left or will be leaving California and heading for Russia. They include world-class figure skaters, Gracie Gold and two-time U.S. champion Ashley Wagner, who hope to make the grade. As star athletes leave, others may be arriving. For those of us who have never won a contest,  it’s even more exciting to see the world’s best. In addition to the first time ever national TV broadcast coverage, the entire contest will stream live on universalsports.com and mavericksinvitational.com . The Olympic Games take place Feb. 7-23, 2014, and are broadcast on NBC TV.
