Glenn Miller, remembered for songs In the Mood, Moonlight Serenade, Chattanooga Choo Choo and Kalamazoo, died far too soon (at age 40) but his band compositions of the swing era remain timeless classics. Miller’s aircraft disappeared on his way to entertain U.S. troops in France during World War II.

Tommy Dorsey and his Orchestra enjoyed incredible success, signing on Frank Sinatra who made 80 recordings with the band.  Dorsey died at age 51, choking in his sleep.

Two great musicians are the toast of the town this week at the Battle of the 1940s Big Bands, Glenn Miller VS Tommy Dorsey, in a two hour musical tribute under the direction of Richard Nelson Hall and his 30 piece orchestra. For those unfamiliar with big band era music, you’re in for big surprises, including some aha moments in which you’ll swear you’ve heard that song before… and you probably have.
