LANCASTER, CALIF. — At the Antelope Valley Fair and Alfalfa Festival this week (Aug. 15-24, 2014) it’s not easy to pick winners: the queen in the Miss Antelope Valley Pageant, and the king in the ‘Alfalfa is King’ contest are both beautiful in their own way. The unlikely pair–a bale of hay king and teen beauty queen are both judged for appearance. In addition to traditional elements of the fair, the bevy of bodacious foods promises to include fried everything — KoolAid, Twinkies, Oreos, and all that wholesome stuff. Performing in fair concerts are flashes from the past such as Kool & the Gang, The Commodores, Lynyrd Skynyrd and The O’Jays.

If you pick a fair to attend this week:

  • Humboldt County Fair in Ferndale is keyed up for Mad Chad the Chainsaw Juggler, Extreme Parrots, and Horse Racing.
  • Quincy Plumas-Sierra County Fair is bullish on livestock in the Junior Livestock Auction.
