Californians didn’t actually invent bodyboarding, nor have we ever claimed a world champ since the international bodyboarding contest began in 1977. But the sport that uses a shorter board than the surfboard can credit California with many contributions  ranging from the manufacturing of the product to the legacy carried on by students and individuals who join teams or compete individually.

  • Californian Tom “Y” Morey  invented the modern bodyboard in 1971, called the Boogie board.
  • Though Hawaii ranks among the best bodyboarding destinations, the famed Wedge in Newport Beach is a must-see stop on Southern California visits, as well as Lower Trestles (San Clemente).
